The rate of the rural population and the urban poor in informal settlement is much lower. 50% of the population lives on less than 2 US dollars per day. Even if a connection would exist to the power grid, the power for most people would not be affordable. Especially for schools, which are located in densely populated slum areas and are not subsidized by the state, are facing major challenges. Solar energy presents a very possible and sustainable solution.<\/p>\n
The country is due to the ideal geographic situations in the ideal conditions for efficient use of solar technologies. Compared to Germany (800-1200 kWh \/m2<\/sup> irradiated Sun energy), whereas the sun in East Africa with 2,500 kWh per m2<\/sup> per year projects at more than double the yield in outcome. Our goal is to promote an autarkic and self-sustaining ecosystem culture for non-state-funded schools in East-Africa. The need is enormous and the positive impact on students and teachers will\u00a0be immense. Therefore we partnered with two schools in Nairobi in a participatory process and exactly analyzed their needs and circumstances together.<\/p>\n
The fundament and the success for this project is in the use of sustainable and modern solar and environmental technologies. The energy cost savings will be invested into the autarkic concept developed in the participatory process. Thus, the money saved remains in a closed cycle and it will in long term be the highest possible yield for the schools. Through this approach the schools will have an improved opportunity to become economically independent.<\/p>\n
Not only the living conditions would improve, furthermore the concept of sustainability would be encouraged to the students already at a young age. The concept is simple and transferable and Kenya offers a large number of potential partner schools. Through the participatory approach\u00a0with\u00a0the schools and the communities and our partnership with local and very experienced partner NGOs we can reach our ultimate goal to improve and upgrade the living situation of the children to make sure that their future is as bright as it should be!<\/p>\n
